I didn’t sit around with a brand consultant and a mood board to come up with the word Perplexed. I chose it because it’s the only word that sums up how I feel most of the time.
Half the time I don’t know whether to laugh, cry, or throw every bloody device out the window.
Perplexed isn’t just confusion. It’s not that I don’t understand what’s happening. It’s that I do understand (too much), and that’s the problem.
I see the contradictions everywhere, I see the bullshit plain as day, and I am constantly left scratching my head wondering how the f*** we all got here.
Take technology. We’ve got AI being sold like it’s magic, when in reality it’s just an overgrown autocomplete. Most of it is not even close to being ‘intelligent’ and ‘AI’ is purely about marketing.
AI as we know it doesn’t know anything, it just rearranges what’s already been written – what it has stolen from millions of creators. Yet you’ve got people acting like it’s divine wisdom delivered from the heavens. Same tools, same limits, same ceiling, just wrapped up in a shinier interface every year. And people still fall for it.
That’s rather bloody perplexing.
Or look at society in general. Scams are everywhere. The headlines swing wildly from one extreme to another (or should I say ‘one narrative’ to the other depending on which way the wind blows), often contradicting themselves within days. One week we’re told to fear something, the next week we’re told it never mattered in the first place. Meanwhile, everyone just scrolls past it like it’s normal. Perplexing.
Even day-to-day life is enough to fry your sodding brain. People glued to their phones while the world passes them by. Businesses cutting corners and calling it “efficiency.” Politicians lying like it’s a part-time hobby. And the scary bit? We all see it, and yet it carries on like nobody cares.
So yes, Perplexed fits. It’s honest. It doesn’t pretend I’ve got all the answers, because I haven’t (oh, nobody has). It’s relatable, because if you’re paying any attention at all, you probably feel the same way at least once a day. And it’s broad enough to cover anything I feel like writing about, whether it’s society, tech, scams, or just the absurdity of modern life.
If you read this blog, don’t expect fluff. Don’t expect “thought leadership” or the sort of polished garbage LinkedIn influencers barf out. You’ll get straight talk, blunt truths, and the odd sarcastic jab. Sometimes it’ll make you laugh, sometimes it’ll annoy the heck out of you, and, if I’m doing it right, it’ll make you think.
Because that’s the point. Perplexed isn’t just a name, it’s a state of mind. And if you’ve read this far, I’d bet you’re just as perplexed as me.
