I’m Going to Be an Andy’s Man Club Facilitator

I'm Going to Be an Andy's Man Club Facilitator

It’s been a couple of months since I first walked through the door at Andy’s Man Club, and I’m still not entirely sure I can explain what it does to you. Not in a way that doesn’t sound a bit soft, anyway. But something shifted. It’s hard to put your finger on it at first. Then it’s not.

So, here’s where things are at. I’ve been asked if I’d like to be a facilitator for a new group that’s opening in our town. I’ve already been to see the venue with the other lads who are getting involved, and they’ve recently done their training. I still need to do mine. Within the next few weeks, that’ll be sorted. There’ll be a new Andy’s Man Club t-shirt at some point too, no doubt.

And then, on a Monday night, we’ll open a door in our town for men who probably wouldn’t make the trip to another town. Which, hand on heart, is the whole point. That’s not nothing. That’s actually everything.

I’m proud to have been asked. Genuinely proud. That’s not a phrase I use a lot, but it fits here.

What I love about Andy’s Man Club – and I realise I’m only a couple of months in, so I’m not exactly a veteran – is the simplicity of it. The structure works because it doesn’t overcomplicate things. You sit down. You talk, or you don’t. Nobody pushes. Nobody fixes. It just… moves.

The brotherhood thing, and yes I know how that word sounds, is real. I’m not naturally someone who goes around calling people “brother” with a straight face. But there’s something in that room that earns the word. You walk in and you’re with friends you hadn’t met yet.

Now, here’s the bit I didn’t see coming.

The more I’ve learned about Andy’s Man Club, the more I’ve pieced together that the man who started it, somewhere around 2016, is someone I actually communicated with a few years back. And it didn’t go particularly well. I wrote about it at the time. I’m not going to rehash it here. What I will say is that it’s an odd feeling, finding yourself on the same side as someone you once butted heads with, even at a distance. Life’s funny like that. Not always ha-ha funny, but funny.

But that’s the past. I’m not carrying it into a Monday night room full of men who need to talk.

The future is this. Facilitator training, a new group, a Monday night door open for whoever needs it. That’s where I’m at.

And I’m looking forward to it.

If you’ve related to anything in here, or you’re just curious, find your nearest Andy’s Man Club at andysmanclub.co.uk. It’s free, it’s every Monday at 7pm (except Bank Holidays), and you don’t have to say a word if you don’t want to. Just turn up.

I’m still here. Writing this out, figuring things out as I go. And if you’re reading this, so are you. That’s worth something on its own.

A note before you go: This post is part of an ongoing collection of thoughts I’ve been pulling out of old notes, voice memos, and things I probably should have written down years ago. Some of it’s raw. Some of it’s just… honest.

My writing:

I don’t write for the algorithms here. I write for you, the reader. So I am so grateful for your time. Thank you for reading.
